Landscaping – Garden Pond Design Advice
A garden pond is a wonderful addition to your home. These little watering holes give an ideal home to flowers, water plants, and animals. Attracted to them are birds, toads, frogs, turtles, and sometimes salamanders. It is like a miniature zoo. These garden ponds may offer a peaceful place to stay for wildlife, but they are pleasing to the eye as well. The vibrant flowers you can plant and the tranquil water are soothing to the nerves. Garden ponds may be designed in seemingly endless ways, but there is some advice that everyone should follow.
Stagnant water will quickly kill off a garden pond, so the water contained must be continually circulated. There are a few different ways to do this. For those who are not into flashy displays, a basic pump will get the job done just fine. Although you may not wish to have an ostentatious display, you will still want to obscure the pump. A stone housing is humble and easy to build. This stone may be formed into a hill so that a small waterfall is formed. Fountains of all kinds are available to keep the water in motion as well.
Some garden pond builders want to fill it with all types of plants and fish so that an unmatched burst of color is formed. That may not work out so well, however, because the numerous water lilies and other water plants you want to keep floating over the fishes’ heads make a tasty meal for the underwater dwellers. This situation is potentially costly and frustrating if you spend your time replacing plants just to have the fish eat them as soon as you place them in the water. You must pick the majority of one or the other. Your garden pond should be either mainly fish or mainly plants.
You have heard it said that real estate is all about location, and this holds true for garden ponds as well. Skimming ponds is tiresome work, and unless you want to spend an inordinate amount of time doing so, do not place your garden pond under a tree. Leaves that collect on the surface choke the oxygen supply, and those that coat the bottom release toxins that are potentially harmful to fish and plants. If your pond is made up primarily of plants, it should be in direct sunlight for at least four hours daily. Fish like some shade, so shrubbery might be considered to drape over a fish garden pond.
Garden ponds are beautiful and will continue to flourish with proper design and care. Relaxing by the pond on a summer’s day is one of life’s little pleasures.
