Norton Commander (NC) — the popular file manager for DOS, originally developed by the American programmer John Socha. (Some additional components have been fully or partly written by other people. The program has been written by company Peter Norton Computing (the head — Peter Norton) which has been later got by corporation Symantec.
Within several years Norton Commander has competed on degree of popularity with file managers PCTools and XTree, however already from the third version Norton Commander has superseded these programs from personal computers.
Working out has been conducted since 1984 (originally under name VDOS). The first version has been let out in 1986.
In Soviet Union and Russia the greatest popularity has been received by versions 2.0 (1988), 3.0 (1989), 4.0 (1992).
The third version has generated the whole series of expansions, patches and the improvements written by the third parties without the coordination with the author. Since version 4.0 has appeared the program has been developed by the whole command of programmers as in 1990 firm Peter Norton Computing has been bought by company Symantec, but the new commander has gradually started to lose popularity as it has increased the size of occupied memory (that was critical for DOS), contained errors and, besides, has started to be superseded by own clones. Less functional than Norton Commander Volkov Commander and Pie Commander, more or less precisely, has copied the Norton interface. DOS Navigator, visually similar with Norton Commander, has given a much bigger number of possibilities. Subsequently clones of other operating systems have appeared: BSD, GNU/Linux — Midnight Commander, Krusader; Microsoft Windows — FAR Manager, Total Commander; and other similar programs.
Command Symantec has continued struggle for the market, having let out for DOS versions 5.0 (1995), 5.51 (1998) and for Microsoft Windows version 2.01. Long names of file support have appeared in Norton Commander 5.51 for DOS with Windows work. But these versions have not received the big distribution, as the clones which have appeared by then and followers NC possessed the big possibilities, and some users preferred to use regular file-manager Windows.

Norton Commander not only has provoked the whole series of own clones and remarks, but also has brought in Russian language pair of new words — «norton» and “commander” which in a slang of users of the personal computer means «the file manager».
