Kitchens For Non-Cooks
Do you know what a griddle is for? A palette knife, a pestle and mortar or a potato ricer? A what?! Yes, they do exist (it’s for making really smooth mash by the way) anyway, what I’m getting at is that if you have more takeaway menus in your kitchen than wooden spoons you really need to keep this in mind when you think about renovating your kitchen.
To add value to your property and just to feel like your house is a finished home it is always a bonus to have a lovely kitchen. If you don’t do much cooking however, it is very easy to fall into the trap of spending more than you need to on the interior finishes and the appliances themselves. Do you need solid granite kitchen worktops if the closest a knife ever gets to the surface is when you butter your toast in the morning? Let’s face it, pizza boxes don’t go in the dishwasher so could you make do with the basic model rather than the all-singing-all-dancing version? Just by making a few changes you can save a fortune and will not even notice the difference on a day-to-day basis.
The key thing with kitchen design is to make sure that the specifications are appropriate for the usage the room gets. There is no need to go to extremes either, it would be very unwise to design a kitchen with no cooker because you only ever use the microwave for example, but don’t be persuaded to buy a professional chef standard range either. Get the balance right and make sure you are fitting out a room which is appropriate for now without devaluing the property for the future.
Oh, and maybe buy yourself Delia’s ‘How To Cook’ book while you are at it – you never know, your new kitchen might inspire you to experiment with the culinary arts and you might just like it!
